Give up your lunch for War Child

This September/October, War Child Australia invites you to do something practical to help children affected by war. To coincide with Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, why not give up your lunch one or more days, and donate the money you would otherwise spend to War Child? Consider encouraging your work colleagues or school friends to participate as well.

No lunch? I’ll starve

You won’t actually starve as a result of missing one meal. You might find it uncomfortable and you might feel pretty hungry by the end of the day, but you won’t die of hunger.

For many children who have been affected by war, having three meals a day is an exception rather than the rule. Put yourself in their shoes for a day.

My Mum/Dad/partner makes my lunch

Lucky you! But that’s no problem. Maybe you can make a donation out of your spending money instead, or ask whoever makes your lunch not to put any “treats” such as chips or chocolates in your lunchbox for a week, and donate the money saved on those to War Child.

I’m diabetic

If you’re diabetic, hypoglycaemic, or have other health conditions that may be affected by fasting, do not skip any meals without consulting your doctor or medical professional. Instead, consider eating normally but making a donation to War Child as well, or forgo that second cup of coffee for a few days and donate the money you save.

More about Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth lunar month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims mark the month of Ramadan with prayer, fasting and acts of charity. Fasting is one of the five “pillars” (duties) of Islam. During daylight hours for the entire month, Muslims eat and drink nothing, including water. Fasting reminds Muslims of the suffering of the poor, and is also an opportunity to practice self-control and cleanse the body and mind. By missing lunch one or more days, you can remind yourself of the plight of children whose lives have been affected by war, and do something practical to help them.

What do I do with the money?

To make a donation or forward funds you have raised, you can post a cheque or money order payable to War Child Australia to:
